Most all know that some campaign promises are often exaggerated, with no ability or intent to keep them.I am very interested in what you think of these past presidential campaign promises that have not been kept. What were the big ones that stand out for you? Were the American people fooled, just outright gullible, or did the American people just want to hear the promise?

There have been so many in my lifetime that it is hard to keep track of. I do remember the "Peace with Honor" campaign promise of Nixon and the "Peace in the Middle East" Promise of Carter as well as the "Read My Lips" promise of the first Bush. It is funny to me that even though I was a strong Republican while in they were in office I seem to remember more broken Republican campaign promises than Republican campaign promises kept. Then you add to that the Reagan campaign promise of "I will bring the Hostages Home" which was later exposed to have been a deliberate setup using the US Marines and the Iran/Contra deal which Reagan setup the Iranian Supreme Council by delivering sabotaged/disabled Fighter Jets and other arms. By the way what ever happened to Marine Colonel Oliver North?

campaign promises are like birthdays--every candidate has one. Indeed, candidates are of the mind the voter will soon forget all the campaign rhetoric, but this is rarely the case. Voters DO remember, especially if the promise-breaking office holder is running for reelection. Alas, broken promises have always littered the political landscape, and (sadly) they probably always will. And like james (above), i,too, have witnessed many disappointments when it comes to broken promises. To say "they all do it", while true, doesn't make the practice forgivable, no matter which party the candidate belongs to, and they do it because they know they can get away with it. The biggest promise i have ever heard was during the 1968 nixon-humphrey election when i heard tricky dick say he had a "secret plan" to end the vietnam war. He didn't have a plan and the war continued for five more years.

When they promise something...I look at the promise. Yes, a lot of candidates have outright lied. It's up to us to find out if they are making a promise their record proves they will never keep. Also, the promise made--is it a deal breaker? And did they promise to work towards the goal or outright claim they would do it and this was a major platform by which you voted them in? Many say it doesn't matter or make the excuse that everyone does it. This is why we keep getting the worst of the worst. If we expect the worst, you can assure we will never see the best!

Which President's are you talking about Nixon, promised Peace With Honor,

EDIT: James, to prove a rule, you need an exception. The fact that Ollie North is a two-bit idiot only proves that the USMC is the greatest service. I would appreciate if you would acknowledge that and throw a bone my way. Your pal, TJ END EDIT
