It sounds to me like you voted for someone because he was NOT black or white.

You are not the only one who feels that way. I assure you of this.

But if you take the time to do some research, you would find that the African-American turnout in this election was not unusually high.

Furthermore: it was the urban demographic that provided the most support for Obama. The urban demographic is also the most mixed demographic.

So, that would lead me to believe that his election was about the issues. Some people were more educated on them than others. Some chose to make their vote based on racism and religion. Some made it based on money. Some made it based upon issues and political concerns. I know this: Obama and McCain made their campaigns abotu the issues, and not about religion or race.

Therefore, if you cast a vote for McCain, and you do it for racist reasons: its a pointless action. Because McCain did not support racism.

What has become "all about race" is the rhetorical debate. Not the actual election.

Race has become a HUGE issue. But I do think that some people did vote on who was a better person. Maybe not a large percentage. But I know for a fact some did.

Besides America probably isn't ready to have a black person for president. people are still very racial, its just too bad that people can't get over the fact that there is black skin, and white skin. But we all should be treated with equality, and be judged on who the actual person is.

Yes this election is mostly about race!
anonymous
2008-11-04 18:16:47 UTC
I agree.

I think people became more interested in getting America out of the light for being a "melting pot". Somehow it seems like the election became commercialized and all about race, I mean, forget politics. Lets vote because he's black and the other guy is white! Not everyone feels the same way but I know there are certain people who are on each side of this argument. Don't get me wrong-- I would vote for whoever has the best platform but I am neither American or of age. I merely am observing from a third person's point of view.

I know that a lot of people did vote this way, but whoever you specifically are for, you should applaud those who voted because of issues not race. A lot of people would argue about what people like Martin Luther King Jr. have said but they have it wrong in what he wanted! He wanted a country where people completely ignore the color of others' skin and just see people for just people!

That is how I feel about it all and no matter which way the racism is coming from or going to, we should just start ignoring it!!
Bianca
2008-11-04 18:18:15 UTC
I don't agree. I know that there are many people who did vote based on race, but there are also many people who actually voted based on issues. This race has been very historical. There was a woman running and a man. But, it doesn't have much to do about race.

2008-11-04 18:14:35 UTC
I for damn sure am concerned! Just as long as my loved ones aren't harmed and the children, and also the elderly then people can raise hell as much as they want despite whoever wins. I never looked forward to this election because everyone has turned it into a racial issue. After this let's look forward to Black Panthers, KKK, segregation and other race issues. The blacks are yelling, "My President is black!" The whites are yelling, "Let's assasinate the ******!" Vote McCain for President!" I actually blame Adam & Eve for biting that damn apple!! I pray for this world and the souls of all the sick and immature people who corrupt it....God bless.....

I think some people will think this way, and you are an example. And I saw Kim Kardashian on TV saying "vote for Abama, for change". What does she mean by change? A black president I wonder?

Having said that, I think that most people are smart enough to make the decision based on the real issues.
anonymous
2008-11-04 18:15:06 UTC
Yes-just listen to the reporters on CNN. They keep pointing out their surveys they take-stuff like "30% of white men voted for Obama-35% of white women voted for Obama"

If its not about race why are the major networks breaking the vote down by race?
Legend in your own mind!
2008-11-04 18:21:02 UTC
Is this the reason that overwhelmingly even whites are voting for Obama? Maybe in states like Indiana, where the KKK had a HUGE stronghold and some southern states yes, race has been an issue among bigots, but not among people with open minds. Is this saying anything about what your noticed about yourself? I assume you own a mirror. You might try using it once in awhile. They really do work. No kidding!

yeah im not old enough to vote but i think that is true in some cases....

i hate it when students high school want to vote for Obama or McCain because of his "issues", they don't pay attention to what they are saying let alone what the teacher is saying.

as long as they look like you then they have your vote.

im not saying that everyone is like this but i know for a fact that some people are.

No, your not. Unfortunately the liberals are blinding everyone with so called "plots to discredit Obama" and "the Republicans have made race a factor." No, Obama made race a factor! McCain has not said one thing! Hey if all this stuff about tying Obama to radical people is a "plot to discredit him why not say the War on Terror is a "plot to discredit" Bush! You don't have much faith in the people of the United States.

True, there are many people who voted based on race, but don't assume that everybody did.

If everybody voted only for the President that matches their skin color than McCain would be ahead (don't forget, people with darker skin are called minorities for a reason.)

Well some of the returns are broken down by race, sex, financial postion on and on....

What's important is the fact that Americans have made their voices heard. Now we have to live with our choice. Let's work together and make President Obama the right choice that brings our great country back from the last 8 disaterous years.

Personally, I DID vote because of the issues. But I have noticed that all of the late night hosts and the comedians have made it about race. (If you haven't heard Carlos Mencia's jokes about Obama and the race card, it is worth watching.)

It has become about race, but unfortunately a lot of things in life have become about race. We lose sight of the big picture. Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes.

For the racists among us, anytime there are others of a different race involved, it becomes "about race" because that's the only perspective they have the capability to see. They will vote, and manage everything else in their lives accordingly.

For the rest of us, issues, experience, and capability and logic weigh into our perspectives and decisions.
anonymous

No. Just because you're p!ssed that McCain is losing doesn't give you the right to say this. I mostly voted Obama because McCain picked a mentally challenged running mate. Also because the Iraq conflict should have never started, and rich people keep getting richer while poor people keep getting poorer.

A race to the white house.

Really, I think it has little to do about race. The only time it has to do about race is in the dirty south...where they don't care about the issues, but the skin color. Whereas the rest of the country really cares about the issues.

Who knows? Even though there are many minorities in America - e.g. Hispanics, which is the biggest ethnic group, White-Europeans is still the dominant group in America. True story for today:

I live in a medium size town of 15,000. There was over a hundred waiting in line for our turn when Mr. Foster, an 87year old African-American, came out of the booth in his wheelchair, with tears in his eyes. He said he never dreamed he would live long enough to see a black man on the presidential ballot equal to a white man. I'm white female but I wanted to cry with him I was so touched.

I'm also sick of hearing about "the race card" but for the first time I really understood what it means to African Americans to reach equality on the highest levels -- or at least I'm trying to understand.
