Question:
Can we all agree that the POW story be put to rest by the McCain campaign?

By now, the 2-3 people in the world who DIDN'T know about the whole POW thing should be WELL informed.

McCain did a great service to his country and is to be respected for doing so.

But, now that the POW horse has been beaten to DEATH by his campaign, can we ALL agree that they need to move their platform to CURRENT events?

Thoughts?

It's nauseating. Four years ago, the right slammed a decorated vet in John Kerry and then elected a draft dodging president. Now that they have a vet, they parade it around like it means something. Four years ago it meant nothing to them...now it's everything. It's complete hypocrisy and typical of the right wing play book.

I support McCain, but I am sick to death of hearing about his ordeal as a POW. We are reminded of his ordeal every time he raises his arms and cannot raise them above his shoulders.

Getting shot down while flying over enemy territory does not make one a war hero, nor does being a POW. What makes McCain a hero is his refusal to accept an early release. Those who trivialize his experience in the Hanoi Hilton because he "broke" under torture show both their mentality and their ignorance. Pilots who are shot down are not given ANY information about even the next day's missions and they are not privy to our war plans. So he gave his captors nothing of value. We should call a truce: No more war stories.

If McCain's supporters, inside and outside his campaign, are not careful, the ASPCA and PETA are going to condemn them for animal abuse. That poor damn POW horse is about to die from so many beatings.

I agree. While I respect him for it, I don't believe his having been a POW necessarily makes him a good candidate for president. On the contrary, I worry about what happened when he was a POW maybe clouding his judgement on some things (I know I would probably hold a little grudge for someone who tortured me) and I know quite a few military men and women who come back from war very different from who they were before they left. Most are, not to be mean, a little crazier and messed up... I know I wouldn't be the same way if I had to shoot people and kill people or cut off limbs and try to fix wounds of wounded soldiers and civilians alike.

Playing the "war hero" card didn't work for John Kerry in 2004. It didn't work for Bob Dole in 1996. The last Presidential nominee who really could have claimed it was John Kennedy in 1960, and while he campaigned as a war her to get into Congress (it was a year after WWII ended, good idea), by 1960 it had been 15 years, and it was like, "You served in the war? So did 4 million other guys!" So he didn't campaign on that. Especially since Eisenhower was the guy he was trying to replace.

I agree with prekin. Somehow it wasn't important in the Bush elections, but now it's supposed to be a deciding factor. And for those who complain about Obama not serving, it wasn't his plan to be born and grow up in a period when we weren't engaged in any wars. If he had enlisted and served in peacetime, I'm sure you would have considered him a wimp and not worthy of respect. Way to go blaming him for an accident of birth!

McCain and the POW story has become as annoying as Giuliani and 9/11.

I think this should put his POW story to rest once and for all.

If you google Vietnam Vets against McCain you will lots of interesting articles. Here's a link to show that not everyone thinks he is a hero.

I agree, Let's just all stipulate that he was in fact a POW and this makes him a war hero, now what is he gonna do for the economy and will he promise to stop aspiring to be a war President.

Why does this bother you so much? All you have to do is turn the channel since you don't want to hear about it.

My grandfather was in the Navy and stationed in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. his ship went down and he swam to another ship and started firing the ship's gun again. I never get tired of his old stories. And when an old friend of his comes to visit the stories are incredible.

Just because you probably never served in our armed forces and done anything for this country you shouldn't speak aloud and try to hush others and their fascinating stories. Maybe you will actually learn something. To be quiet and listen intently is to show wisdom in yourself. Try it sometime!

I agree, I've heard more about his POW story this week than I have about current events and his policies.

A noun, a verb + POW will dissipate on November 4, 2008.

He is not going to stop. He has used his military background as his primary focus in every election he has ever ran in. It is a distinction but I agree with you that he needs to do and inform of much much more (and without doing so I do not believe he will win).

Yes i do agree, while Mccain should be commended and honored for that experience...

its doesn't have to have such a leading role in the campaign in my opinion.

Sure, how about you libs give us a great Obama story then? I am sure he has some great achievment that we all need to hear about. Maybe he contributed to Ayers and his terrorist attacks on America...that would be a great story to share.

Unfortunately, the horse isn't dead yet, and they'll keep running it as long as it's breathing.

I'd prefer to talk about obama's accomplishments as a community organizer but I understand there are none so it wouldn't be much of a conversation.
