do the people choose the president or a group of peopel ?

i was wondering because the electoral votes decide who it is right? so why do we vote if a Group of people will decided for us if i'm wrong correct me i still don't get all of it

The electoral college system was devised when a horse was the fastest way to travel. Electors are chosen by each political party in every state, and charged to bring the state results to the electoral college, where the presidency would be decided. The popular vote actually decides which party of electors will participate at the college in voting for the president.



There are exemptions allowed to the electors in order to deal with contingencies such as the death of a candidate, etc. If, after much discussion in the electoral college, there was no majority of electoral votes for any candidate, the House of Representatives elected the president, for example John Q. Adams.



The system became obviously obsolete with the advent of overnight cross-country travel by airplane, and instant news via electronic communications. However, there are some obvious flaws (potential abuses and manipulations) with the "popular vote" (one-person, one-vote) system, so we are apparently staying with the electoral college until a clearly better system can be defined.

It's not a group of people: every state has a different number of electoral votes. The candidate that wins the popular vote for that state gets the number of electoral votes it has.



Eg. California had 55. Obama wins popular vote in CA and gets 55 electoral votes.
