The great-uncle, C.W. Payne, is listed here in the roster of the 89th Infantry division who were the first American troops to liberate a concentration camp during WWII.

http://89infdivww2.org//home/list_p.htm

There are seven "Paynes" listed and two "Paines" listed for the 89th Infantry Division.

One of the Paynes is listed as W C Payne and it's quite possible that initials got transposed. It's also possible that one or more of the Paynes was actually a Paine and vice versa.

I am a descendant of Robert Treat Paine, who signed the Declaration of Independence and I have seen his last name spelled Payne but it's usually the Paine spelling. I've also seen Thomas Payne's last name spelled both ways.

Do not believe the desperate folks who will tell you that no Charles Payne served in the 89th. Read the 89th's own roster list and see for yourself.

Obama was for his "uncle" before bloggers found out that he doesn't have an uncle - his mother had no brothers and there's no record of any Kenyans in the US Army in WW 2.

This is but another transparent attempt by Obama to prove his patriotism (good luck with that, Barack) through tenuous and non-existent family links.

It was 'great' uncle Jeremiah, they old crazy coot who was locked up in the attic like Norman Bates' mom.

Obama is the nephew of Uncle Ben. You know, with the rice.

If you check the 89th's own web site you find that Charles Payne did serve with them, and is not the Charles W Payne that is getting referenced on here due to some inept researching

"Concerning the service of Mr. Charles Payne: C.T. Payne was a soldier in the 89th Infantry Division. He served in the 355th Infantry Regiment, Company K. The 355th Infantry Regiment was the unit to liberate Ohrdruf. Mr. Payne was there"

very well done Blue Eyes!!! love the research data, being as Obamas grandmother was white I'd have to presume the soldier in question was as well but not certain about that but in that time period it would be most probable.

You are always very well informed, who knows with this group?...Maybe like Barry ...Jon is a nickname...lol...I am not even sure Obama and Barry are the same guy..and I have yet to see his birth certificate. I think he's a robot sent from some other country...won't name which one..just waiting for him to zip off the outer layer...

We know the truth it is his Great Uncle. Why do you want to bash Obama. Everyone clear the story and it is true. His Great Uncle is still alive. You should be concern about why Bush lied to us and has gotten 4089 of our soldiers Killed.

Jon Virgil Payne is the youngest of four siblings:

1. Madelyn Lee

2. Charles Thomas

3. Margaret Arlene

4. Jon Virgil, born 1937

All of these individuals are currently living and any further vital information is personal and private.

On the matter of the military service of Charles Thomas Payne, the great-uncle of Barack Obama:

Charles is the uncle (the term "uncle" has in fact been used even for great-uncles in that family) who served in the Army in the 89th Infantry during WW II and suffered severe enough PTSD that, after coming back from the war, he isolated himself at home for some time.

Charles recovered, attended college and to this day is an active, mentally vital, 83 year-old resident of Chicago.

This information was confirmed tonight by a member of the Payne family and is being posted to correct the mis-information that is swirling around the internet.

CORRECT info:

1. Charles' middle initial is "T", not "W";

2. he did have what is now termed PTSD; and

3. he was so traumatized by what he encountered during the war, that he in fact did isolate himself at home for a lengthy period of time.
