Hugo Chavez died today, but he's been really sick with cancer for 2 years.I know Obama is healthy, but what would happen if tomorrow the doctor told him he has lung cancer and has to undergo surgery, chemo, radiation.Would Obama have to resign, or temporarily step aside until he felt better?Honestly, people his age, do get cancer.

The Order Of Succession would require the current Vice President, in this case--Joe Biden, take over for Obama in a "acting" POTUS capacity, until Obama recovers from such illness.

God forbid.

IF, however, Obama befalls too ill to carry out his job as POTUS, THEN VP Biden would be officially sworn in and take over as POTUS, God forbid.

25th Amendment, Section 3: "Whenever the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that he is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, and until he transmits to them a written declaration to the contrary, such powers and duties shall be discharged by the Vice President as Acting President."

So if Obama became too ill to effectively serve as President, he would write a letter to the Speaker and President Pro Tem that he was stepping down until he was able to resume his duties. Joe Biden would become the Acting President.

If Obama became so ill as to make it clear that he would need to resign, that letter would go to the Secretary of State.

George L: Actually the 25th was proposed after the Kennedy assassination. Early reports from Dallas stated that the President was alive but had suffered massive brain damage. That made people realize there was no formal method for removing a President who was alive but unable to serve short of impeachment.

Joe Biden would take over the day to day. Check out Woodrow Wilson. He had a stroke and his wife took over the presidency. He should have retired, but his wife did a pretty good job. She is know as the first women president.

He'd likely continue the disguise of being President. His wife doing what Woodrow Wilson's wife did. Lead from the bedroom her husband rests in. CGI being pretty good these days? I'm sure our Liberal friends would cheer just as high for a CGI illusion.

After all? Isn't Michelle doing that already? They always say a "powerful" POTUS has an even more powerful wife behind him.

He would invoke the 25th Amendment, turning over power to the VP. Assuming he would get better, he'd jump back in when ready.

We have a chain of command. If the president cannot perform his duties the VP takes over etc...He can return if he is later fit for duty.
