Question:
Do we now know why McCarthy suddenly dropped out of the vote for House Speaker?
2015-10-09 13:31:25 UTC
Is it because he was was carrying on a long running affair with a Congresswoman?

Multiple sources within Bakersfield, North Carolina, & on Capitol Hill tell Gotnews.com that Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Renee Ellmers (R-NC) have been carrying on a long-running affair since 2011.

The affair is something of an open secret in Washington, D.C. Reporters at other publications, lobbyists, congressional staffers of both parties all know about it. One staffer for a congressman describes it as the “biggest open secret” in D.C. A lobbyist describes Ellmers as a “social climber who has ingratiated herself” with McCarthy.

That would be an alleged affair but no not why he stepped down. For one thing the speaker needs 218 votes to actually be elected which wasn't going to happen once Chefftz from UT threw his hat in but it's also a thankless job even more so now that a group calling themselves something like the Freedom Crap (I just forget what they actually call themselves duh!) but an ultra conservative group of 40 house members are insisting anyone who runs sign a form acquiescing to their specific list of demands which basically states they do what they want OR ELSE. I don't care if you're a Democrat or a Republican these people were not elected to run their own private agenda at the expense of this country and that's exactly what they want to do. Obviously they're not a majority with only 40 but they are doing what typical brats who have tantrums in public do. That also explains why Paul Ryan isn't jumping at the chance though many think he'd win. Anyone from the group of 40 would never win, either needing that 218 vote count. The speaker can't run his agenda he has to do what's right for the majority plus work across the aisle. There are a few who don't understand world economy and say shut down the government except it would be catastrophic. Not just for us. A solution needs to be found for what they want the way it's always been done: judiciously. Don't blackmail the people of this country and other elected officials just to get your way you were not elected to run your personal agenda regardless what it is. For some it's a ridiculous as demanding there be mandatory underwater basket weaving taught in schools but not anything else if you understand my point. (I was once an elected official and read and read and read, too otherwise I wouldn't know any of this!)

From his own answer on Quora;

"When I said that my leadership style is based on listening, I meant it. You may have trouble believing this – I truly didn’t seek public office to be someone, but to do something for our country.

I know people are angry at Congress. I know people are frustrated by Washington’s seeming inability to do the work that you send people there to do. I know people are skeptical of anything an elected official has to say. To be completely candid, I understand why you feel that way, because I feel the same way.

I truly believe that we are here as public servants; our job is to work for you – period. Your public servants should not be here to gain power or positions; we should be here to do what’s best for our country.

House Republicans need a new leader that can unite them, and after many days of talking with my colleagues, it became clear that I would not be that person. The selection of a new Speaker can never be about a single person, it must be about doing what s right for the country.

We need a new start – a fresh face who can bring Congress together. I hope that my choice will help heal the wounds that are keeping well-meaning people from finding common cause for our country.

I said 2-3 days ago that he dropped out because there were skeletons in his closet.

He doesn't want the press delving too deeply into his past. I don't think that messing around with a woman that wasn't his wife was the worst of the skeletons. Having an affair isn't illegal. But I think there are some things that he's done that could be illegal. That's what he hopes to hide.

The supposed "affair", by itself might not have stopped him, but add to that the huge gaff about the Benghazi committee and he was done. Who in their right mind would want to be speaker of the house. Trying to get republicans to agree with each other on anything is next to impossible. Right now Boehner is starting to look good, given the alternatives. God help us if some far right tea party republican becomes speaker. The present congress is a do nothing congress, with a conservative it can only get worse.

In 2010, Renee Ellmers defeated Bob Ethridge for the NC District 2 Congressional seat. You might remember Bob as the man who assaulted a student who was trying to interview him (see link). Bob Ethridge was the poster child for "Corrupt Politician". In his long career in Washington, Bob facilitated every scummy Democratic plan ever proposed. After Renee defeated Bob, do you think he just retired and enjoyed himself? Of course not. Instead, Bob spent his days plotting against the woman who took his House Seat away from him. So now we're seeing the results of Bob's craftiness. Renee is in a scandal and Bob is sitting in his little room and laughing demonically as it all plays out. What a loser.

Do you not read the paper or listen to the news? Besides admitting the republican party in congress unlawfully used tax payers money only to discredit Hilary Clinton for political gain. He is uneducated, and can not speak a coherent sentence, except admitting targeting Mrs.. Clinton just to hurt her politically. He also has not done anything meaning full in all the time he was in congress. Only 2 bills to rename something.

Because the conservatives and Tea Party types saw another Boehner type and they refused that, they would like a Paul Ryan type that refuses to run because Ryan knows that with these unrealistic Tea Party types that the job will be h e l l and he doesn't want to live day to day subject to their constant no govt. rhetoric. Paul Ryan would rather get on Fox news and tell us how Obama has sent this country to h e l l financially and touts the financial austerity blah, blah, but doesn't have the guts to live with his decision making every day.

1) Because of false accusations cooked up by ultra-right-wing fanatics hoping to ensure that no SANE or REASONABLE person became House Speaker, because they hate reason and sanity, and 2) He didn't want to deal with the headache of having to deal with the afore-mentioned crazed maniacs, and who can blame him? The highly-ironically named "Freedom Works" and Tea Party nutcases have made governance impossible, since they would rather have NOTHING than to "only" get 90 or 95% of what they want, since that would mean other people got 5 - 10% of what THEY wanted, and that's compromise and therefore EVIL and totally unacceptable, so they will choose to get NOTHING rather than make a deal which would force them to compromise their "values"...

sorry, genius, if "i did not have sex with that woman" didn't phase the voters, I doubt this would've either. lets face it, slick willie set the standard with that one. it was the idiotic Benghazi comment, I'm sure as well as peoples anger with congress personified. I will give him credit for one thing. I never thought four murders could be trivialized so well with "what difference does it make" and the subsequent coverup". the knee jerk reaction of the Obama and Clinton faithful to that remark he made will surely trump it.

NO. We do not know for a fact why he decided not to seek the position. Rumors are always abound in such cases. I do however believe (not know) that he like Boehner, would not have a full backing by many in their party, thus there would always be resentment and battles within.

Not familiar with any affairs he may or may not have had. The reason he quit is quite simple. Admitting to using congressional funds / committees for the sole purpose of fabricating dirt on Clinton (via the Benghazi committee) is the reason.

But in fact I really do not care, it is a sideshow.

There are far more important things to know about government corruption than that alleged sex lives of elected political hacks.

Those things have no effect on national security.

This does:

In case you don't know, negotiating missile defense from the viewpoint of the Russian dictatorship refers to convincing NATO nations to not be able to defend themselves from Russian aggression.

At the same time the above incident occurred, Russian agents provocateurs were exporting Russian nationalist propaganda and Russian weapons to militants in Ukraine. Since that time Russia has annexed Crimea and intends to continue in acquiring territory by the same method.

“House Chooses New Cold War With Russia… Last week the US House voted overwhelmingly in favor of an anti-Russia resolution so full of war propaganda that it rivals the rhetoric from the chilliest era of the Cold War… The resolution condemns what it claims is a Russian invasion of Ukraine (for which it offers no proof) and Russian violation of Ukrainian sovereignty. But it was the US, by backing a coup against the democratically elected Yanukovich government in February, that first violated that country’s sovereignty.”
